Age-related Macular Degeneration, Lakeport, CA

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease that causes blurry central vision, making it difficult to drive, recognize faces, or read small print. It’s a leading cause of vision loss for people aged 50 and older. Often, symptoms aren’t noticeable until AMD progresses to the late stages, which is why regular eye exams are crucial for early detection. At Konocti View Optometry, our comprehensive eye exams include screening for macular degeneration using advanced technology to detect any signs of the condition.

Treatment for age-related macular degeneration

There are two main types of AMD: dry and wet AMD. Dry AMD, the more common form, advances gradually, leading to slow central vision loss. Currently, there are no treatment options available for dry AMD, but low vision aids like magnifiers or special glasses can help you see better. Taking supplements such as vitamins C and E, zinc, and lutein may also help slow its progression and stop intermediate AMD from developing into late AMD.

Wet AMD, while less common, is more severe. It happens when abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina, leading to fluid or blood leakage and rapid vision loss. Fortunately, treatments like anti-VEGF injections can stop the growth of these vessels. Our skilled eye doctor will examine your eyes and recommend the most suitable treatment for your needs.
